Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer

Stevie Wonder’s performance at the Michael Jackson Memorial was, in my opinion, the best we saw today. I first heard Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer when I saw the movie Poetic Justice and it has been a favorite of mine since. The second song, hauntingly sung by Stevie Wonder, is called They Won’t Go When I Go.

I never dreamed you’d leave in summer
I thought you would go then come back home
I thought the cold would leave by summer
But my quiet nights will be spent alone

You said there would be warm love in springtime
That is when you started to be cold
I never dreamed you’d leave in summer
But now i find myself all alone

You said then you’d be the life in autumn
Said you’d be the one to see the way
No I never dreamed you leave in summer
but now I find my love has gone away
Why didn’t you stay…

Here’s Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer in the Poetic Justice film, starring Janet Jackson. It’s weird for me to watch this clip, as this song will have a different imprint on my mind now that Stevie Wonder sang it at MJ’s memorial.
